Faith & Food Historic Church Dine-Around Bus Trip

Travel around Cumberland and enjoy rich colonial and religious history and delicious food from the ethnic roots of the churches visited.

Tuesday, July 25, 2017    $118.00 per person

Your first stop, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Washington Street. Home to the oldest Lutheran congregation in Western Maryland, this lovely church is the 5th to house the parish, which began in a log cabin in 1794. Here you will enjoy a delectable BREAKFAST, followed by a tour of the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, which display not only religious themes, but local and national history! Fascinating!

12:00 p.m. Next, enjoy a SOUP and SALAD course at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church. With a history which dates back to the Civil War and beyond, this 1851 cathedral harbors a congregation which incorporated in 1790. We’ll see the vaulted ceiling and the ancient Stations of the Cross – and don’t forget to ask about the resident ghost!

1:30  p.m. Then it’s on to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for your MAIN COURSE, a delectable English Shepherd’s Pie! This lovely 1849 structure, built on the site of the 1755 Fort Cumberland, boasts tunnels which were once part of the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD and stained glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Here you’ll learn the history of the fort and church, and hear some sacred musical selections – then explore the tunnels beneath the church!

3:30 p.m. The final stop is for DESSERT at B’er Chayim Temple for Jewish holiday desserts. B'er Chayim is one of the oldest continuously operating temples in Maryland.  The temple was built in 1864, but the congregation is known to have met as early as 1853.
