The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American history.

This 400,000-square-foot museum has five levels above ground and four more below and in addition to exhibit space, the museum has a theatre, cafe and an education center. The inaugural exhibitions will feature some of the museum's 34,000 artifacts, including a segregated railroad car, a shawl worn by Harriet Tubman, a traveling trunk that belonged to the family of the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, an airplane used to train Tuskegee airmen, Nat Turner's bible and objects from a sunken slave ship.
